I doubt that the 17 USD stewmac are different than the 5-10 USD ebay tuners... You know stewmac's overpricing policies :)

My suggestion is getting some rubner tuners... the cheapest on their site (the ones without decorative elements and engravings) are 16 EUR including ADV. I am not aware if they have a minimum order though. Many builders have even compared them to the schallers and other low-mid priced 50-80 USD tuners performance vise.

+1 on the Rubner Tuners; can get the most economical ones for around $45

I've tried the cheapest Rubners. Hmmm, they work. Just about all that can be said of them. I suppose you shouldn't expect too much at that price point.
Anyone tried the Der Jung tuners made in Taiwan?

I've used some of the $10 or so tuners from eBay, perfectly adequate for a "cheap student guitar", if its about as bad as I suspect...

I have one set of the Der Jung tuners fitted on my Yamaha guitar.
The worm gear is not as smooth as the better tuners but so far it works just fine and holds the tuning pretty well.

I've tried some of the cheap Asian tuners as well as the economy Rubner tuners. The Rubners are clearly better for not much more money. The Asians are OK for a cheap guitar and at least as good as what would have been originally been on it.

Believe it or not Grover makes a very
good tuner for cheap.
They have tension screws & work great!

Try the 304C or the 304G-chrome or gold are what
the C & G mean.
go to -
